Spring Into Summer: Why Colorado Drivers Should Schedule a Pre-Summer Vehicle Checkup

Colorado drivers know that spring weather can be unpredictable. One day feels like summer, the next brings rain, hail, or even a late-season snowstorm. As temperatures start climbing and road trip season approaches, now is the perfect time to make sure your vehicle is ready for everything Colorado roads can throw at it.

At Legacy Automotive, we recommend a pre-summer inspection to help prevent breakdowns, improve safety, and keep your vehicle running efficiently.

Colorado Driving Is Tough on Vehicles

Between steep mountain roads, stop-and-go city traffic, dirt roads, potholes, and sudden temperature swings, Colorado vehicles work hard. Winter can leave behind hidden wear on important systems, and those issues often show up once the weather warms up.

Salt, sand, ice, and cold temperatures can affect your brakes, suspension, tires, battery, fluids, and alignment. A spring inspection helps catch small problems before they become expensive repairs.

1. Check Your Tires Before Road Trip Season

Your tires are one of the most important safety components on your vehicle. After winter driving, it is common to see uneven wear, low tread depth, or tire pressure changes.

Before summer travel, have your tires inspected for:

  • Tread depth
  • Cracks or bulges
  • Uneven wear
  • Proper inflation
  • Alignment issues

If you use winter tires, spring is also the time to switch back to all-season or summer tires. Driving winter tires in warm weather can cause them to wear out much faster.

2. Don’t Ignore Your Brakes

Mountain driving is hard on brakes. Long downhill grades, heavy traffic, and winter road grime can all contribute to brake wear.

Signs your brakes may need service include squeaking, grinding, vibration, a soft brake pedal, or longer stopping distances. Even if your brakes feel normal, it is smart to have them inspected before summer trips into the mountains.

3. Test Your Battery

Many drivers think batteries only fail in winter, but summer heat can be just as hard on them. If your battery struggled during the cold months, warmer weather may finish it off.

A quick battery test can tell you if it is still holding a strong charge. This is especially important before a road trip, camping trip, or long drive through remote areas.

4. Make Sure Your Cooling System Is Ready

Your cooling system protects your engine from overheating. As temperatures rise, problems with coolant, hoses, the radiator, thermostat, or water pump can become more noticeable.

If you notice the temperature gauge running high, coolant smells, leaks under the vehicle, or steam from the engine bay, schedule service right away. Overheating can cause serious engine damage.

5. Check Your Air Conditioning

Nobody wants to discover weak A/C on the first hot day of the year. If your air conditioning is blowing warm air, making odd noises, or taking too long to cool the cabin, it may need inspection.

An A/C service can help identify leaks, low refrigerant, worn components, or airflow problems.

6. Inspect Belts, Hoses, and Fluids

Rubber parts can become brittle after winter, and fluids can become dirty or low over time. A spring maintenance visit should include checking:

  • Engine oil
  • Coolant
  • Brake fluid
  • Transmission fluid
  • Power steering fluid
  • Windshield washer fluid
  • Belts and hoses

Fresh fluids and healthy belts help your vehicle run more reliably in warmer weather.

7. Be Ready for Colorado Road Trips

Whether you are heading to the mountains, towing a trailer, commuting along the Front Range, or planning a summer vacation, preventative maintenance gives you peace of mind.

Before your next trip, make sure your vehicle has:

  • Good tires
  • Reliable brakes
  • A strong battery
  • Clean fluids
  • Working lights
  • Proper alignment
  • A healthy cooling system
